Baroque Prints of the 17th Century, 80 etchings, engravings, and woodcuts from the Toledo Museum of Art's collection, will be displayed Friday to July 31 in the Works on Paper Galleries on the lower level. This artistic period, roughly 1600-1750, was inspired by the Catholic Church, hoping that dramatic, realistic religious images would have a positive influence on its illiterate congregants. In Italy, the works were mainly religious but in northern Europe, artists rendered landscapes and scenes from lives of common people.
Also at the museum, Rembrandt expert Ernst van de Wetering of Amsterdam will speak at 7 p.m. March 3 in the Peristyle about how a small portrait of the great artist was recently determined to be by Rembrandt instead of one of his contemporaries. The oil-on-copper portrait was mistakenly attributed to another artist, but new research indicates it was done by young Rembrandt. In his 1997 book, Rembrandt, The Painter at Work, Van de Wetering wrote of the artist's technical, artistic, and esthetic aspects.
At 1:30 p.m. March 5, people who are experiencing the early stages of memory loss and their companions are invited to Meet Me at TMA. This month's program will feature a metal-smithing demonstration. Meet in the museum's lower-level Herrick Lobby. Registration is suggested but not required: 419-537-1999.
