Mr. Atomic exhibit set for Perrysburg

Brothers combine talents to create pop surrealist art

There’s an exhibit on display in the Perrysburg Municipal Building featuring the pop surrealist art of Mr. Atomic.

Mr. Atomic is not one, but two people who work under that pseudonym. Not only that, but they are twins.

Mark and Michael Kersey, use the term Narrative Pop Surrealism — “The suspension of disbelief” to describe their colorful, quirky style of painting. Their pieces include surrealistic landscapes, moving still lifes, and celebrity portraits.

The exhibition, which features 18 Mr. Atomic paintings that are all 3-foot-by-4-foot verticals and horizontals, is being showcased in the building at 201 W. Indiana Ave., through June 15. It can be viewed from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

“Our motto is ‘If they don't walk away from our paintings being different … then they just must be indifferent,’” Mark Kersey said.

The brothers, 63, work in acrylics on canvas.

They used to work in commercial art in New York, and returned to Toledo to open a gallery and paint full-time in the 1990s. They are located in Common Space Centers for Creativity, 1700 N. Reynolds Rd.

“We share the studio space but not the painting chores on any individual piece, working independently but offering feedback without invitation concerning the other’s composition,” Mark Kersey said.

The exhibit is sponsored by the City of Perrysburg, and curated by Main Art-ery.
