Large oil paintings by Perrysburg artist on exhibit

The large-scale oil paintings by a local artist who died earlier this year will be showcased in a solo exhibition of her work at 20 North Gallery in downtown Toledo.

Joanne Grossmann: The Larger Narrative, offers a showing of the late Perrysburg resident’s work from the 1970s through 2000. Grossmann died May 5 in her Perrysburg home at the age of 86.

Her work was frequently shown and awarded at area shows including the Toledo Area Artists’ Exhibition at the Toledo Museum of Art, despite her reputation as a quiet, modest artist.

GALLERY: Large-scale oil paintings by local artist to be showcased

The show at the downtown gallery, 18 N. St. Clair St., opens Friday with a VIP preview, then remains open to the public through Dec. 30.

There will be public reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 20.

Grossmann studied art at Ohio University and frequently painted scenes that included horses based on her love of horse racing. A collection of her pieces was part of the show, Derby Days, at 20 North Gallery in 2004.

20 North Gallery describes the show as a re-introduction to the contemporary community of Grossmann’s ability to tell a visual story.

“Upon first look, Grossmann’s paintings capture locations or themes personal to the artist, but a closer look reveals the ambiguity in these representations. Using settings with figures seemingly isolated within their own stories, Grossmann’s works in oil invite viewers to explore the many layers of these narratives,” the gallery writes.

20 North Gallery is open from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. For more information, go to 20northgallery.com.
