It’s not what you are drawing. It’s not even how you are drawing. It may not even by why you are drawing.
It is just drawing.
Yusuf Lateef is a longtime local painter extraordinaire who recently completed his MFA at Bowling Green State University. After the challenges and rewards of academic rigor, Yusuf decided he wanted to teach a class that got at what he really loved about art: having fun just drawing.

“[I’m trying to teach] ways to help people use what they have at their access,” said Yusuf, “Ok, if you don’t have a pencil, what do you have? But also, what is drawing and what is drawing from?… What is the performance of drawing?”
Each class consists of four 2-hour sessions. Yusuf has taught two previous classes, but they were for teens. He anticipates a slightly different experience in the adult classes simply because they are more set in their determinations of what “is and isn’t.”
But that is exactly the reward Yusuf hopes the adults would glean from the class, removing barriers to their true intuition of line making.
“Chill out, loosen up, and let’s not think about this as right or wrong,” said Yusuf.
The next intuitive drawing class taught by Yusuf Lateef starts Monday, March 19 at 6 p.m. at the Art Supply Depo in downtown Toledo.
