Hudson Gallery show features work of 9 artists

Blue Skies Summer Group Show at Hudson Gallery features paintings, prints, ceramics, and glass by Kay Weprin, Mark Wagar, Jan Thomas, John McLaughlin, Scott Horn, Mille Guldbeck, Judy Munro, Tom Marino, and Susan Morosky through Sept. 21. Levis Commons Fine Art Fair will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Town Center at Levis Commons in Perrysburg, featuring work by 125 artists and children’s activities. Information: theguild.org.

Appetite for the Arts will be this weekend at the Erie-Ottawa Regional Airport Executive Hangar. A gala with silent auction, edibles, and music by the Womak Family Band will be 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Adult classes are 10 weeks, meet once a week for 2½ hours on Tuesday or Thursday evenings, and cost $187. Children’s sessions meet for two hours Wednesdays after school for 10 weeks and cost $172. River Raisin National Battlefield Park has an exhibit relating to the Battle of the River Raisin and early Frenchtown that will continue through Sept. 2. Work by area artists, including photos, sculptures, paintings, and prints, are displayed. At 1 p.m. Aug. 24, Brad Schreiber will instruct visitors how to draw the park’s mascot, Major Muskrat. Muskrats, plentiful in the area, helped early European settlers stave off starvation. River Raisin is the site of the devastating January, 1813 Battles of Frenchtown that occurred during the War of 1812. Brett Weston Landscapes will open Saturday at the University of Michigan Museum of Art and continue through Dec. 1. Described as an “intuitive visual genius,” he shot images from his teen years in the 1920s through the 1980s. He died in 1993. The son of pioneer photographer Edward Weston, he captured sweeping vistas and detail shots that are stunning in their use of light, darkness, and texture. The show continues through Dec. 1.

Also opening Saturday and continuing through Jan. 5 is Performing Still Images: David Claerbout and Michael Buckingham. Claerbout’s The American Room addresses the relationship between photography and video with thousands of still images portraying an audience in a musical performance and classical setting. Buckingham’s Image of Absalon Projected Until it Vanishes projects the slow, cinematic, fade-to-white of a projected slide image. This season’s new-media shows will focus on performativity in contemporary art and is guest curated by Rudolf Frieling, curator of media arts at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
