UAW to vote on contract next week

UAW to vote on contract next week

Leaders hope 2-day voting will better control message

The United Auto Workers said Monday that it will squeeze voting on a tentative contract with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles into two days next week.

The 40,000 UAW members who work at Fiat Chrysler, including 6,500 in the Toledo region, will vote either Oct. 20 or 21, officials said. The two-day voting period is likely in part an attempt by UAW leadership to better control the message and avoid miscommunication. Voting on a previous deal that was ultimately rejected was spread out over nearly two weeks.

UAW President Dennis Williams said last week that members spoke clearly that they weren’t happy with the contents of that agreement, which failed by a 2-1 margin. However, Mr. Williams also said the UAW leadership should have done a better job of explaining parts of the contract and responding to members’ questions.

By waiting nearly two weeks from the time leaders first accepted the tentative deal to hold the ratification votes, the UAW is hoping it can get better address members’ questions and concerns this go-round.

Voting dates for the three Toledo-area units weren’t immediately available, although UAW Local 12, which represents workers at the company’s Toledo Assembly Complex, has scheduled its informational meetings for Wednesday.

Local 12 is the largest local union, with about 5,000 members. It also was among the most opposed to the failed contract, voting it down nearly 9-1. UAW members at Toledo Machining Plant in Perrysburg Township and Dundee Engine Plant also will be voting.

In the previous deal, Toledo Assembly and Toledo Machining workers rejected it; Dundee Engine production workers approved it.

Among the biggest changes from the rejected deal are the elimination of the wage gap between veteran workers and more recent hires through an eight-year progression to full pay, the elimination of a health care co-op plan, and more clarity on job security by promising all three Toledo-area manufacturing facilities will retain their employment levels for the life of the four-year deal.

Also included in the deal are ratification bonuses of at least $3,000, wage increases for veteran workers, a boost in 401(k) contribution for current tier-two employees, and a pledge by the company to invest $5.3 billion in its U.S. facilities.
