Quarterback from Texas commits to BG

Quarterback from Texas commits to BG

Jarret's brother Seth is new Falcons assistant

BOWLING GREEN — Around northwest Ohio, hearing the name of one of the first members of Bowling Green State University’s 2017 football signing class would likely produce a shoulder shrug.

But fans of Big 12 football, especially at Texas Tech, will quickly recognize the name of quarterback Jarret Doege, who recently committed to the Falcons.

Doege’s older brother Seth was a two-year starter at Texas Tech, throwing for 4,004 yards and 28 touchdowns as a junior in 2011 before passing for 4,205 yards and 39 TDs as a senior the following year.

Seth Doege saw action with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2014, then joined the new staff of coach Mike Jinks at BG as a graduate assistant.

“It’s great to have my brother there, because I love my brother — he taught me everything I know about football,” Jarret Doege said. “But the entire coaching staff — coach [Mike] Jinks and [offensive coordinator Kevin] Kilmer, and the whole staff are all good dudes.

“I’ve been going to camps at Texas Tech since the fourth or fifth grade, so they’ve seen me. We have a connection.”

NCAA rules prohibit Jinks and his staff from talking about potential recruits until they sign a national letter of intent, which takes place in February.

Last season Doege led Lubbock Cooper High School to the Texas District 4-5A title by completing better than 67 percent of his passes (175-of-260) for 2,122 yards and 22 touchdowns with just five interceptions. Doege received all-state honorable mention in Class 5A for his performance.

As a sophomore Doege started for Iraan High School and completed nearly 62 percent of his pass attempts (117-of-189) for 1,897 yards and 19 TDs with seven interceptions.

Two other players have committed to BG for 2017 besides Doege: Another quarterback, Chris Katrenick of Jacobs High School in Algonquin, Ill., and defensive back Shermond Dabney of St. Mary’s High School in Orchard Lake, Mich.

As a sophomore, Katrenick threw for 1,367 yards and 12 touchdowns; last season he led the Golden Eagles to the Illinois state playoffs.

Dabney plays cornerback for the Eaglets and was a starter for last year’s Division 3 state champions. He is a talented athlete who finished eighth at 171 pounds in the Michigan state wrestling tournament and also ran hurdles and relays as St. Mary’s won the Division 2 team title.

SCHEDULE UPDATE: Bowling Green nearly has completed its schedule by adding several Big Ten opponents.

In 2017 the Falcons will open at home against FCS member South Dakota on Sept. 2, then play at Michigan State the following Saturday.

BG was supposed to play at Indiana, but the Falcons instead picked up the game against MSU for $1 million and will use part of that guarantee money to pay Indiana a $200,000 buyout.

The Falcons will finish the 2017 nonconference schedule against Middle Tennessee as the second game of the home-and-home contract that will bring the Blue Raiders to Doyt Perry Stadium this year.

In 2018 Bowling Green will open the season at Oregon on Sept. 1, then is scheduled to host Maryland on Sept. 8, host an FCS opponent to be determined on Sept. 15, then play at Louisiana Tech Sept. 22.

In 2019 the Falcons are expected to open at Maryland Aug. 31, then play at Kansas State Sept. 7, host Louisiana Tech on Sept. 14, then play an FCS school Sept. 21.

Earlier this spring BG added a game at Illinois on Sept. 19, 2020.
