The 93rd annual Toledo Area Artists' Exhibition, which opened last Friday and runs through Sept. 25 at the Toledo Museum of Art, was preceded Aug. 19 with "An Evening with the Jurors, Tasteful Temptations and Conversations." The event was hosted by the Toledo Federation of Art Societies, a nonprofit organization of groups that promote the arts through exhibitions and education.
Formerly known as the "Jury Dinner," the event was in the museum's Glass Pavilion. Artists, art aficionados, and the judges enjoyed a strolling dinner with foods and desserts prepared by the museum's chef.
The Toledo School for the Arts' Urban Jazz Collective played as folks mingled and checked out objects for purchase from the museum's glass studios.
Museum director Brian Kennedy and associate curator Amy Gilman, who were the jurors for the exhibition, remarked about the entries in this year's exhibition and discussed plans for future shows.
Everyone who attended was eligible to win one of several works donated by some of Toledo's most prominent artists including Leslie Adams, Carol Imes-Luscombe, David Herzig, Scott Horn, Tom Marino, and a collaboration between Robin Schultes and Patrick Dubreil.
Thanks go to the event committee: Leslie Adams, Sue Duckworth, Ginny Francis, Linda Sattler, and Lucy Webster.
Member groups of the federation include the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo, Athena Art Society, Bowling Green State University School of Art, Black Swamp Bead Club, Collingwood Art Center, Lourdes University, National League of American Pen Women Northwest Ohio Branch, Northwest Ohio Watercolor Society, Owens Community College, Perrysburg Arts Council, Tile Club, Toledo Area Glass Guild, Toledo Area Sculptors Guild, Toledo Friends of Photography, Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo Potters' Guild, Toledo School for the Arts, Toledo Women's Art League, and the University of Toledo Center for the Visual Arts.
The Salon des Refuses Art Exhibition opening reception was held recently at the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo's Parkwood Gallery. The show features art that was not accepted for the TAA Exhibition, hence the show theme, "Where the Rebels Go to (Dis) Play." Sponsored by Prizm, the show included its own awards: best of show went to Jefferson Nelson and first place went to Tina Gionis. Other award winners included Seder Burns, Elissa Ackerman, Jennifer Solon, Neal Harmon, Mary Jane Erard, William G. Petruzzi, William Barry Roberts, Kelly Sheehan, Deborah Rankin, Hannah Lehmann, and Marsha McHugh.
The Refuses show runs through Sept. 23.
