BG women blown out at Buffalo

AMHERST, N.Y. — The Bowling Green State University women’s basketball team ended the regular season Saturday with a 74-38 loss at Buffalo in a Mid-American Conference contest at Alumni Arena.

The Falcons, who fell to 11-18 overall and 3-15 in MAC play, shot just 15-of-62 from the field (24.2 percent), including just 3-of-27 on 3-pointers (11.1 percent), and were outscored 24-6 in the third quarter as they lost for the 11th time in 12 games.

Bowling Green be the No. 11 seed in the league tournament and play at sixth-seeded Western Michigan in the first round Monday.

Andrea Cecil, an Oak Harbor graduate, and Angela Perry led the Falcons in scoring with eight points each.

Buffalo (25-4, 16-2 MAC), which is the second seed in the tournament, got points from 14 different players in the win. Autumn Jones led the way with 13 points, and Cassie Oursler added 12.

Bowling Green missed its first 10 shots from the floor until Carly Santoro connected on a driving layup with 3 minutes, 47 seconds left in the first. But the Falcons kept the game close early because they allowed the Bulls to score just six points in that span, and Buffalo’s lead was just 11-7 after one.

Perry scored the first basket of the second, but Buffalo took command of the contest by making three 3s — Jones made the first two, Cierra Dillard the last — to give the Bulls a 20-9 advantage with 8:27 before halftime.

The Falcons came no closer than eight after tha,t and was down 32-20 at halftime.

After the two teams exchanged points to start the third, Bowling Green went more than six minutes without a point as Buffalo used a 15-0 run to break the game open. The Bulls outscored the Falcons 24-6 in the third to lead 56-26.

Then Buffalo scored the first 10 points of the fourth and led by as many as 43 before settling on the final margin.
