MAC Hall of Fame adds 2 BG, 1 UT standout

CLEVELAND — The Mid-American Conference announced its 2018 Hall of Fame class Friday, and three of the five honorees have ties to northwest Ohio.

Among those elected to the MAC Hall of Fame are Bowling Green State University pitcher Orel Hershiser, University of Toledo women’s basketball standout Dana Drew-Shaw, and past BGSU president Carol Cartwright.

The other two athletes selected are Eastern Michigan quarterback Charlie Batch and Northern Illinois running back Michael Turner.

Hershiser was an All-MAC pitcher for the Falcons who won the 1988 Cy Young Award and pitched the Los Angeles Dodgers to a World Series title that year. He holds the Major League Baseball record for consecutive scoreless innings with 59, a mark he set in 1988.

Drew-Shaw was a two-time MAC player of the year in 1992 and 1994 and helped lead the Rockets to three NCAA appearances and one WNIT berth. Drew-Shaw currently ranks second on Toledo’s career assists list (659) and is fourth in career scoring (1,919 points).

Cartwright served as Bowling Green interim from July 2008 until taking the job full-time in January 2009 and serving for three years. Cartwright, who also was president at Kent State from 1991-2006, once chaired the NCAA’s Executive Committee and during her career also served on the NCAA’s board of directors.

The quintet will be officially inducted at the MAC Honor’s Dinner on May 30 at Cleveland’s Renaissance Hotel.
