Man accused of killing auto-shop owner jailed

Terry Hayes went into R&D Auto Sales, 5010 Lewis Ave., with a gun late Tuesday morning, police said.

Moments later, after an argument, the shop’s owner, Ricky Layson, 35, was lying on the floor, shot twice.

The suspect allegedly fled the shop with a “soft-sided computer case” and was captured on surveillance images from the auto-sales company’s security cameras, police said.

Mr. Layson was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 3:03 p.m. Meanwhile, police had identified the suspect from the surveillance images.

Hayes, 48, of 3137 Lagrange St. was booked into the jail just before 2 a.m. Wednesday and later was arraigned in Toledo Municipal Court for murder and aggravated robbery. He was ordered to remain in the Lucas County jail in lieu of $2 million bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 16.
