TEMPERANCE — Glen S. Grosteffon, who served on various public boards and as a Monroe County bailiff, died Wednesday at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in South Toledo. He was 76.
Mr. Grosteffon of Temperance suffered a blood clot after a fall about eight months ago. He received ongoing treatment and later died from an infection, said his wife, Patricia Grosteffon.
For 20 years, Mr. Grosteffon worked as a bailiff to Judge Michael LaBeau in Monroe County's district and circuit courts. The judge was a friend, and he loved the position, Ms. Grosteffon said.
Mr. Grosteffon provided safety for the judge and his clerk, and transported inmates from the jail for hearings.
His wife said he decided to leave the job in 2004 upon seeing multiple members of the same families for criminal cases.
“The only reason he finally retired was because he was tired of seeing the third generation in court,” she said.
For about a dozen years, Mr. Grosteffon was also a dispatcher for the National Cement Company. He managed contractors' calls, determined supplies, and placed orders with the organization.
“He got to know probably every cement layer, bricklayer, and big contractor in the city of Toledo at the time,” she said.
Mr. Grosteffon also worked as a truck driver, and survived a near-fatal experience in 1969. He was loading the vehicle on a humid day near Lima when some of the truck’s wiring shocked him.
His wife said it was by good fortune the shock did not kill him. He escaped with nerve damage, but remained grateful it was not more serious.
Mr. Grosteffon enjoyed public service and joined numerous agencies. He was a Monroe County commissioner, Bedford Township Park Commission member, and Lions Club of Bedford Township president.
Ms. Grosteffon described her husband as quiet and laid back.
She recalled one instance, however, when he spoke with an irate resident while serving on the Bedford Township Planning Commission. The citizen joined others in opposing construction of a new grocery store, arguing the building was out of place in the area.
Mr. Grosteffon joked to the citizen that some did not want her there, either. The two later became friends.
“It was probably the first time he really talked back to someone,” she said.
Mr. Grosteffon was born March 7, 1939, in Petersburg, Mich., to Dawson and Bessie Grosteffon.
He graduated from Bedford High School in 1957, the same year as his first date with his future wife. They married two years later.
Along with his wife, Patricia, Mr. Grosteffon’s survivors include his sons, Cameron and Scott; sisters, Loann Garno and Sharon Bialorucki; six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Dec. 19 beginning at 2 p.m. in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Temperance. Pawlak Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
The family suggests memorials to St. Paul’s or the Lions Club of Bedford Township.
