David Katz a judge of the U.S. District Court in Toledo died early today in Promedica Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania from cancer. He was 82.
Judge Katz had been on senior status with the federal court since 2005. He was nominated by President Bill Clinton in 1994 to fill a vacancy in the court’s Northern District of Ohio.
A native of Findlay, he attended Ohio State University and graduated from the college’s law school in 1957. He was an attorney for Spengler Nathanson until his appointment to the court.
Judge Solomon Oliver Jr., chief judge for the Northern District of Ohio, announced flags at all courthouses in the district will be flown at half staff through Thursday in Judge Katz’s honor.
“Judge Katz’s contribution to our court has been immeasurable,” Judge Oliver said in a written statement this morning. ”He came to the court with a keen sense of fairness and a very large dose of common sense. He could always be counted on. He was highly respected by the lawyers in the community. Though he had many strengths, one of his greatest was his ability to resolve complex cases involving multiple parties. As Chief Judge, I often sought and received his wise counsel. Every judge on our court highly valued David’s friendship. We will all miss him greatly.”
