Ponder Rosenberg exoneration

Michael and Robert Meeropol want President Obama to exonerate their mother. They say she was not a traitor and a spy.

The Meeropols are the sons of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, who were executed in 1953 for espionage. New evidence suggests President Obama should read their correspondence and consider their request.

The brothers were only 7 and 3 when their parents were arrested in 1950 and convicted of conspiring to give secrets about the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union. Michael will be 74 in a few months. Robert will be 70 next spring.

New findings show that the trial testimony of David Greenglass, their mother’s brother, which helped to secure the Rosenbergs’ convictions, never implicated her directly in the case. The Meeropols want a public exoneration. The brothers are not acting on behalf of their father because they believe he was guilty of conspiracy to commit espionage.

Sadly for the Meeropols — who were adopted by Abel and Anne Meeropol — the Secret Service turned them away when they took their case to the White House on Dec. 1. However, they sent a copy of their request to President Obama, whom they believe is their last hope.

President Obama should review the Meeropols’ request.
