The University of Toledo will host the 14th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Celebration Monday, themed this year after his call to do for others.
The community event this year is being used as a call for volunteering for fellow community members, UT’s interim President Nagi Naganathan and Mayor D. Michael Collins said.
“Together, we can make a difference in our community,” Mr. Naganathan said.
The event’s theme is inspired by Mr. King’s call that “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” Community members should use the holiday to follow Mr. King’s lead and find ways, big and small, to help their fellow Toledoans, event organizers said.
“What did I do today as a human being to improve the condition of another human being’s life?” Mr. Collins said.
The event is from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Savage Arena. Monday and will include musical performances, essay readings, and scholarship presentations, with a community luncheon following the ceremony. Mr. Naganathan said that about $10,000 in scholarships will be awarded.
Event co-chair Marcus Sneed, who is associate director of the UT Alumni Association, expects a crowd of about 5,000.
