Senior administrator Cruickshank leaves UT

Senior administrator Cruickshank leaves UT

Led enrollment management, online education

Cam Cruickshank, the University of Toledo senior administrator in charge of enrollment during a time when UT’s student numbers tumbled, has left the university.

Mr. Cruickshank was hired in October of 2012 as UT’s interim vice provost for enrollment management and most recently held the title of vice president for enrollment management and online education. In an agreement signed Thursday, the university and Mr.Cruickshank stipulated that he would work as a transitional consultant until the end of February.

He could not be reached for comment. However, in a statement released by UT, he said that his departure was tied to the change in leadership at the university.

“With any new president there is also some turnover,” he said. “[UT President Sharon] Gaber is working to build a leadership team that is the best fit for her and I respect that.”

He was responsible for developing UT’s “marketing, recruitment, financial aid, and retention strategies,” according to a biography posted on the university’s website. He also held the title of chief online education officer.

In 2013, the university’s then-provost, Scott Scarborough, who is now president of the University of Akron, said part of Mr. Cruickshank’s duty was to “reverse the enrollment decline.”

But, UT’s enrollment has dropped every year since 2010, when it reached a headcount high of 23,085 students. In fall of 2014, enrollment fell to 20,626 students. UT is expected to release this fall’s enrollment numbers next week.

The UT statement said that Ms. Gaber and UT leaders are developing a new strategy to recruit students, and that as that strategy is developed, she and Mr. Cruickshank “agreed that.... [he] will leave the University.”

Mr. Cruickshank previously was vice president for enrollment management at the private Tiffin University and co-founded Ivy Bridge College, an online school that began enrolling students in 2008 and announced its sudden closure in 2013. The school, of which he was general manager, shut down after an accreditation group told Tiffin University to divest from an Ivy Bridge partnership with the for-profit company Altius Education and accept no new students.

Ivy Bridge’s partners wanted to sell the school after obtaining independent accreditation, but the accreditation proposal was withdrawn when it became clear it would not be supported by the accrediting body.

In 2011, Mr. Cruickshank founded Enrollment Builders, an enrollment consulting company. Soon after his arrival at UT, some faculty union leaders expressed concern that his multiple roles could create conflicts of interest.

Mr. Cruickshank started at UT as a hired consultant making $1,200 a day. Within about six months of his arrival, he was recommended for a full-time position.

His most recent salary was $224,000 a year, said UT spokesman Jon Strunk. He will be paid at his same rate until his role as a consultant ends.

Mr. Cruickshank’s departure is the most recent change to Ms. Gaber’s senior leadership team. Ms. Gaber, who started July 1, added a chief of staff position and combined two other cabinet-level jobs into one position.
