A Woodward High School transgender student was not allowed to wear a skirt to school Thursday, though Toledo Public Schools officials say they were unaware the student identified as transgender.
The student, who was born male but identifies as female, came to school in a skirt for picture day for the orchestra, a district spokesman said. The district’s dress code calls for boys to wear “dress, casual, or corduroy pants as well as knee-length shorts,” but the district says it makes accommodations for transgender students.
Woodward officials, however, were unaware the student is transgender, and so consider the skirt a violation of the dress code. The student chose to leave the school, and district officials later learned the student identifies as a girl.
