ABOUT THE TEAM:
Coach: Gardner Howard, sixth year
Last season: 2-8, 2-3 CL
Returning letter winners: 19
Returning starters: Offense 5, defense 5
Schemes: Spread/4-3
Top players: Seniors Tony Smith, 5-11, 190, QB-LB; Tyler Slawski, WR-DB; Jeremy Zervas, OL-DL; Fred Irish, OL-DL. Juniors Jovan Sanson, OL-DL; Nicholas Jensen, OL-DL; Scott Hawkins, QB-DB. Sophomores Daniel Powell, WR-DB; Noah Paprocki, OL-DL; Anthony Ashford, RB-LB.
Outlook: The Indians offense will look different without No. 1 rusher Cyrron Barringer and do-everything quarterback Johnny Douanglee, who were the team's senior leaders last fall.
Barringers and Douanglee finished as the top two scorers in the City League with 13 and 12 touchdowns, respectively.
But with nearly 20 letter winners, Howard still has plenty to work with and the Indians look to be competitive in league play.
Slawski, who caught 21 passes for 255 yards, is the top returning skill player.
Smith, who was All-CL second team at linebacker, will be asked to lead the offense as quarterback.
The Indians will need sound play on defense from the likes of Zervas, Irish, Sanson and Jensen to seriously contend.
