Include candidate Covey

On the playground, even the worst of players usually are picked to play a game, unless a bully is involved. Sadly, such is the case in Toledo’s mayoral race (“Toledo mayoral candidates to debate twice on top issues,” Sept. 15).

Opal Covey brought her ball to the field in the form of signatures on a petition. She wants to play, yet is being bullied into sitting on the bench.

Not extending an invitation to Ms. Covey to take part in the Sept. 23 Internet debate among mayoral candidates sponsored by the University of Toledo and The Blade is unfair, discriminatory, and bullying by exclusion.

Referring to Ms. Covey as “a perennial candidate for mayor who says God has told her to run for the city’s top office,” as you did in your article, is negatively biased, especially when no other candidate was quoted about his or her personal beliefs or religious thoughts.

You portray Ms. Covey as nothing more than the city’s loon and poke fun at her religious beliefs. Perhaps she would not be deemed a perennial candidate if the media and city treated her with the same respect given all other candidates.

How militant are Syrian refugees?

The number of mature male refugees from Syria is alarming (“Refugee surge to Europe stokes fears; Some warn that disguised militants sneak into countries as migrants,” Sept. 16).

How many of them are trained fighters who are being given transportation, food, medical treatment, and asylum in Western countries? This invasion is welcomed by the invaded.

Refugees’ new home: Bush’s Texas ranch?

Ignored in the discussion of the Middle East refugees is the cause of the destabilization there: the George W. Bush invasions and subsequent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The refugees should be sent to former President Bush’s ranch in Texas.

Ruling undercuts family unit

It was hard to accept the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to legalize the union of same-sex people and call it marriage (“Clerk exits jail to cheers of rally, GOP hopefuls; Judge says she can’t stop gay marriage licenses,” Sept. 9). Marriage from the beginning of all cultures was always a union of a man and a woman. Marriage was and always will be the foundation of society.

Family life begins when children are born. All children need both a mother and a father to mature into adulthood. Good families make a good society. The identity of the family unit and its survival are in jeopardy.
