To the editor: BGSU made the right choice

I commend the Bowling Green State University Board of Trustees for naming Dr. Rodney Rogers as the permanent president, replacing Dr. Mary Ellen Mazey. His internal institutional experiences and responsibilities as the former senior vice president and provost is truly an asset, along with the mentoring he was provided by Dr. Mazey.

To quote board of trusees chairperson Megan Newlove, “It became obvious we had exactly what we were looking for in place.” As The Blade’s Feb. 23 article “BGSU names Rogers university’s 12th president” stated: “Keeping the hire in-house meant the university didn’t have to go through an expensive and lengthy search.”

Thank you to the BGSU Board of Trustees for Dr. Rogers’ appointment and for being considerate enough to save the taxpayers’ dollars in the process.

Work for a real solution

President Trump suggested that we change the minimum age to purchase a gun from 18 to 21. I agree with that. It won’t fix the whole problem, but it’s a start.

Why does any 18 year old need to purchase a gun? Why are assault rifles available to anyone who walks into a gun store? Why does a civilian need an assault rifle? A hunting rifle makes sense if you are a hunter.

And why does the NRA oppose such a change? Who are these people that they refuse to agree to any change that would help prevent putting guns into the wrong hands? Why do they have so much influence? Our lawmakers should fight for thoughtful, substantive changes to our existing gun laws. Arming our teachers, on the other hand, is not the answer.
