The University of Toledo announced Tuesday the beginning of construction of a $24 million inpatient rehabilitation hospital on its Health Science Campus.
The 49,000-square foot Rehabilitation Hospital of Northwest Ohio is being built and paid for by the New Mexico company Ernest Health Inc.
The company currently runs 23 post-acute-care hospitals, including 15 rehabilitation hospitals in at least 10 other states.
“I think this is a nice opportunity for a private-public partnership to expand rehab in northwest Ohio. It also allows us to increase our teaching mission, so we saw this as a good opportunity,” said Dr. Christopher Cooper, cardiologist and senior vice president for clinical affairs at University of Toledo Medical Center.
The hospital will be at 1445 West Medical Loop, just south of the Dana Cancer Center.
It will provide services to patients recovering from strokes, brain and spinal cord injuries, as well as other injuries and illnesses.
The rehabilitation services currently offered at UTMC, the former Medical College of Ohio hospital, will move to the new facility when it opens in about 10 months.
There are 22 rehab beds at UTMC and the new facility is expected to have 40 beds.
University officials also estimate 120 jobs will be created by the opening of the new hospital.
