ProMedica, UT open neurosciences center

ProMedica and the University of Toledo on Tuesday formally unveiled the joint neurosciences center to provide specialized academic and clinical services for the Toledo region.

The 122,000-square-foot building at 2130 W. Central Ave. offers care for a variety of neurological specialties, including stroke, epilepsy, pediatric neurology, movement disorders, and dementia. It began taking patients April 9.

It’s the most significant physical manifestation of the academic affiliation between ProMedica and the UT College of Medicine and Life Sciences — part of the University of Toledo Health Science Campus, which is the former Medical College of Ohio.

Medical students and residents from the university will conduct research there and see patients under a variety of medical sub-specialists.

“It’s the result of a lot of hard work. We said that this would be unique when we started,” ProMedica President and CEO Randy Oostra said of the two institutions’ work together. The center, he said, was a celebration of that collaboration.

“Today we’re proud to showcase a very tangible outcome of our partnership,” UT President Sharon Gaber said. “The joint neurosciences center presents yet another example of how our students, residents, and fellows can enhance their medical education in an interdisciplinary and dynamic environment and provide outstanding patient experiences working alongside ProMedica and UT physicians.”

The building has space dedicated for doctors to see and treat patients; rehabilitation and physical therapy, and academic conference rooms for collaboration and research.

ProMedica officials have said about 50,000 patients are expected per year, and the center will employ about 425 staff members.
