Downtown is hopping for Mud Hens' home opener

Fans wasted little time flocking to downtown Toledo on Thursday ahead of the Mud Hens’ home opener.

By noon, hundreds of people had already set up their tailgates in parking lots. Thousands more were packed inside the bars and restaurants around Fifth Third Field.

Joe Napoli, president and CEO of the Mud Hens and Walleye, said Opening Day has become a holiday.

Hensville officially became part of the downtown outdoor refreshment area (DORA) last June, which allows revelers to roam designated streets with glasses of alcohol. This will be the first year DORA will be in effect for Opening Day.

Michael Keedy, director of events and entertainment for Hensville Toledo, said the public’s use of DORA allows people to move and walk around instead of staying inside a busy pub.

At least 20,000 people are expected to spend the day in and around the ballpark. First pitch against the Pawtucket Red Sox is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.

The Mud Hens hit Fifth Third Field again at 6:35 p.m. Friday while the Toledo Walleye first-round playoff series against the Indy Fuel begins a few blocks away at 7:35 p.m. at the Huntington Center, 500 Jefferson Ave.,

The Mud Hens also play the Pawtucket Red Sox at 5:05 p.m. on Saturday followed by another game at 2:05 p.m. Sunday while the Walleye continue their hunt for the Kelly Cup with Game 2 against Indy at the Huntington Center at 5:15 p.m.
