Get ready: The Valentine Theatre’s annual fund-raising gala goes Motown on Saturday night with “The Temptations Revue,” featuring Barrington “Bo” Henderson, the Temptations’ lead singer from 1998 to 2003.
The show will include songs spanning more than a decade of the Temptations hits, including “My Girl,” “Ain’t too Proud to Beg,” “Treat Her Like a Lady,” “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” “Papa Was a Rollin Stone,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” “Just My Imagination,” “Get Ready” of course, and more — “all of that good stuff,” said Henderson. There also will be a six-piece band.
And then there’s the Temptations-style choreography. “Yes, we’ll bust a few moves,” Henderson said. “You know, we’re movin’ and groovin’, we definitely won’t be standing still.”
The Temptations’ R&B sound, which has been celebrated since the 1960s, still captivates young and old, “from 8 to 80.” When asked if he hears some echoes of that sound in today’s R&B, Henderson said, “Yeah, it’s been so influential. Throughout the history of our music some of the younger artists have incorporated to some degree the Temptations [influence].
“This young sensation Bruno Mars, I think in his music you can hear the influences of the old-school music,” he added.
Henderson won a Grammy for the Temptations’ Motown album Ear Resistable, which won the 2001 Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Album; it also featured Otis Williams, who founded the Temptations in 1961. “The album is, well, irresistible,” he said, “with a good mixture of old school and a little bit of new school to create a really good blend of today’s music and the nostalgic.”
Henderson grew up around music; his mother, Joyce Henderson, who died recently, was a noted jazz singer who introduced him to the music at a young age. His interest in music is primarily because of her, he said. “She was my biggest fan.”
“I had great times; my mom would take me on the road with her when I was a little boy. The exposure to the art [of music] was the greatest part of it. My mom was my biggest inspiration and my biggest influence.”
Onstage with Henderson at the Valentine Gala will be Terry Horn, a Detroit native who has toured with Ali Woodson, who was a member of the Temptations from 1984 to 1986 and 1988 to 1996; Larry Johnson, who has appeared with groups that include Ali Woodson’s Emperors of Soul and Heatwave; Steven Wood, who has performed on the Richard Street Legacy Tour with the Temptations, and Michael Ashton White, who is a member of Motown in Motion, Larry Johnson’s Essence of Motown, and the Temptations Revue. Horn also has performed with the Michigan Opera Theatre
