Jim Renacci: Brett Kavanaugh is a thoughtful, experienced jurist and should be approved

Within moments of President Trump announcing Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court, Senate Democrats and liberal special interest groups immediately announced their opposition and began spreading untruths and false news in an effort to torpedo Mr. Kavanaugh’s nomination — and deal President Trump a political blow.

One liberal special interest group, the Women’s March, even sent out a press statement that attacked President Trump and his nominee, but had “XXX” in place of Judge Kavanaugh’s name. In other words, they already had their attack message ready before they even knew who the nominee would be. This is partisan politics at its absolute worst; but unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for Washington where party loyalty trumps the facts.

So let’s look at the facts. We have testimonials from people who went to school with Judge Kavanaugh, who clerked for him, and who have worked with him on cases, as well as editorials from newspapers across the country. And all of them make it clear that Brett Kavanaugh is a kind-hearted, brilliant, thoughtful, and experienced jurist who would make an excellent Supreme Court Justice. Not only does Judge Kavanaugh have almost 12 years of experience as a judge for the D.C. Appeals Court, he also served as a clerk for the Supreme Court Justice he will likely replace — Justice Anthony Kennedy.

The Supreme Court plays a pivotal role in interpreting and enforcing our Constitution and it is imperative that every Supreme Court nominee, no matter which party nominates him or her, is thoroughly vetted and screened. That is why the Framers gave the U.S. Senate the responsibility of advising the president on his choices.

What the Framers did not intend was for left-wing special interest groups and ultra-liberal Senators to block a well-qualified judicial nominee because that judge does not support a liberal agenda or have a history of legislating from the bench. The Court is supposed to be a place that is free from personal agendas and political affiliations. We need Supreme Court justices who follow the Constitution — and the Constitution alone — when they try cases before them. And that is the kind of justice Brett Kavanaugh will be.

Unfortunately, Senator Sherrod Brown doesn’t want that. He wants judges who will legislate from the bench to enact the liberal agenda he supports.

Since President Trump was sworn in, Sherrod Brown has gone out of his way to block the President’s appointees and his agenda. He voted against 15 of the President’s Cabinet nominees and even led a revolt on the Senate Finance Committee in an attempt to block two of the President’s Cabinet nominees. According to FiveThirtyEight, Sherrod Brown has voted against President Trump’s agenda 80 percent of the time.

His record on judicial nominees is just as bad. After supporting 100 percent of President Obama’s judicial nominations, Sherrod Brown has opposed more than 53 percent of President Trump’s judicial nominees. Even more outrageous, when President Trump nominated Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court in 2017, Mr. Brown immediately announced his opposition only “moments after” the announcement.

This is what Ohioans — and all Americans — are sick and tired of. There are too many career politicians in D.C. who care only about their “side” winning. In the meantime, the American people are losing.

If Sherrod Brown ignores Mr. Kavanaugh’s highly regarded record and once again tries to block President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, the people of Ohio will not stand idly by. We deserve a Senator who reveres the Constitution more than they revere Chuck Schumer.

Jim Renacci is the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate and currently represents Ohio’s 16th Congressional District.
