Oregon police called to break up fights among shoppers

To some Black Friday shoppers, deals at the Oregon Walmart and the Westfield Franklin Park Mall's Victoria Secret seemed too good to pass up and were worth fighting for.

Oregon police officers responded to the Walmart at 3721 Navarre Ave. at least three times Thursday night for reported fights, Sgt. Tim Zale said.

“Punches were thrown,” the sergeant said. One of the fights, he said, was over towels selling for $1.88.

Officers had a hard time getting into the store because it was so crowded. By the time they reached the reported fights, people had dispersed, Sergeant Zale said. The entire Walmart parking lot was full and parked cars had spilled over into other nearby businesses, he said.

The sergeant added there have not been any reported problems at the store Friday.

Organizing nearly 500 people waiting to enter Victoria Secret on Friday morning created a disorder, police said.

A Toledo police incident report states that mall personnel and off-duty police officers working a special project detail tried to organize the crowd into a line just after 4 a.m. when the shoppers "began to resist," and started to push each other.

Additional police crews were called to the store for crowd control. No one was arrested.
