Fire left to burn at Bellevue factory

BELLEVUE, Ohio — A smoke advisory has been lifted in the area of a magnesium fire Tuesday morning at a factory on Bellevue's west side, but several nearby roads remain closed.

There were no reported injuries at the scene of the fire at MagReTech, Inc.’s plant at 301 Sandusky County Rd. 177, where four truck trailers loaded with magnesium caught fire early Tuesday, Bellevue police said.

The fire was being allowed to burn out because no water could be used, according to a police and fire dispatcher. Magnesium reacts with water.

The fire was reported about 4:45 a.m. As of 11 a.m., the fire was still burning but diminishing, the dispatcher said.

The factory building itself was not involved.

County roads 177 and 302 were closed, as were Bellevue Schools and a Norfolk Southern Railroad freight line that passes next to the factory.
