A construction worker critically injured last month in a crash on the Anthony Wayne Trail in Maumee died Monday.
Brad Griffitt, 40, of Holland had been in a coma since Sept. 19, when a westbound tanker truck driven by Mike Barr, 46, of Holland struck the rear of a lighted sign truck being used by the crew from DG Slurry-Seal of Toledo Inc. to alert motorists to the construction near Seventh Street.
The Lucas County Coroner’s Office will schedule an autopsy. Sgt. T.J. Stratton, public information officer for the Maumee Police Department, said the investigation is continuing.
Mr. Griffitt was the most seriously injured of the three men hit. Sergeant Stratton said Mr. Barr, who was not hurt, told police he had fallen asleep at the wheel. The sign truck was pushed into and over Mr. Griffitt. It was ultimately pushed across the median and the eastbound lanes and into a yard and house on River Road.
Dan Bethany, Jr., 64, of Toledo also had been walking alongside the truck. Mr. Bethany and the driver of the sign truck, Franco Garcia, 54, of Perrysburg suffered minor injuries.
Mr. Barr was not hurt.
