Crash on U.S. 23 leaves one dead, northbound lanes reopened

Northbound lanes of U.S. 23 reopened tonight after a fatal crash forced the road closed about two miles north of Airport Highway Wednesday afternoon.

The Ohio Highway Patrol said Kelly Darnell, 50, of Sherwood, Ohio was driving a 2006 Ford pickup truck south on 1-475 in Springfield Township around 3:45 p.m. when she lost control of the vehicle. The truck veered into the median and overturned several times, ejecting Ms. Darnell, who was not wearing a seat belt, the patrol said.

The truck continued across the median and struck a northbound Ford van driven by Michael Leese, 31, of Maumee. Mr. Leese was treated for injuries at the scene, but not taken to a hospital. His passenger, Joshua Cullen, 39, of Canton, Ohio was taken to Toledo Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, the patrol said.
