Family members say the man who was shot dead Saturday in his South Toledo driveway was returning from a holiday party and gave no indication of being threatened.
Isaac King Jr., 56, was pronounced dead at University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio Hospital, where he was taken after the shooting about 5:50 p.m. outside his residence in the 400 block of Danberry Street.
Mr. King’s step-daughter, Sherrie Allison, 25, who lives off Collingwood Boulevard, said her father gave her a ride home from East Toledo, where they had both been Saturday afternoon, though at different locations. He texted her that she had left her cappuccino in his car.
“He didn’t act like anything was wrong. He was telling me about the gifts he and my Mom got my kids for Christmas,” Ms. Allison said. She said he also asked her to name some songs for him to compile on a CD he had promised to burn for her.
“He wasn’t looking back. He said I’ll call you when I get to the house,” Ms. Allison said.
A votive candle and a long-stemmed red rose were left by a neighbor in front of the neatly maintained home on Danberry, just off Airport Highway.
Mr. King’s wife, Brenda Montgomery, said Mr. King was “a friendly person who got along with everybody.
”He went to a friend’s house for a party on the East Side. He goes every year,“ she said.
She said he was gone about two hours.
She said she heard three shots as soon as he pulled his car onto the driveway. Her daughter, Amia, 11, also heard the shots and saw what she thought was a blue car.
A neighbor told police he heard the shots and looked down the street to see a dark car, possibly a Chevrolet Impala, driving slowly away.
Ms. Montgomery said Mr. King was on disability due to a back injury. She was not aware of anyone who would want to shoot him.
”We’re in the dark. We don’t know,“ Ms. Montgomery said.
Mr. King was convicted of a fourth-degree misdemeanor domestic violence charge in 2010 against Ms. Montgomery.
