Parents of man slain in 2011 arraigned in shooting

Johnny Clarke, girlfriend found dead in Springfield Twp. home

A couple whose son was killed in Springfield Township almost four years ago was arraigned today after an alleged shooting incident involving a woman who they believe was involved in their son's death.

John Clarke, 45, of 428 Danberry St., is charged with felonious assault for allegedly firing two shots at Tiffany Williams, 28, of Toledo, late Friday night in an alley in the 1300 block of Colburn Avenue. According to an affidavit filed in Toledo Municipal Court, the shots narrowly missed Ms. Williams' head.

Clarke was ordered to remain in the Lucas County jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.

Maytee Vazquez-Clarke, 44, is charged with obstructing official business for allegedly telling officers at the couple's home that no one else was home. Police later found Clarke inside the residence.

Mrs. Clarke was released on her own recognizance. She sat quietly through her husband's arraignment. After her husband's appearance, Mrs. Clarke and the couple's attorney, Ronnie Wingate, declined to comment.

The Clarke's son, Johnny Clarke, 21, and his girlfriend, Lisa Straub, 20, were killed Jan. 31, 2011, at Ms. Straub's parent's Springfield Township home.

Samuel Williams, 24, was sentenced to two life terms after a jury convicted him in July, 2012, of two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of kidnapping, and one count of aggravated burglary.

Autopsies performed on Clarke and Ms. Straub showed that they died of asphyxiation. Their wrists had been bound with duct tape and plastic bags were taped around their necks. Clarke’s ankles also had been bound.

Citing a lack of sufficient evidence, Lucas County Common Pleas Judge James Bates acquitted Williams’ co-defendant, Cameo Pettaway, of all charges.

During the trials, Ms. Williams, who is not related to Samuel Williams, testified that she spoke to Johnny Clarke the night he and Ms. Straub were killed. She said Johnny Clarke seemed to be speaking to a man, at the Springfield Township home, who he did not know.

Ms. Williams testified that she and a friend, Zachary Burkett, were supposed to hang out with Johnny Clarke and Ms. Straub Jan. 30, 2011. The two later went to the Straub's home to look for their friends, but never got a response.

In October, 2013, Mrs. Vazquez-Clarke was arrested for menacing after she went to Mr. Burkett's mother's home and shone a light inside windows, according to a Toledo Municipal Court affidavit. Mrs. Vazquez-Clarke was also accused of driving by the Burkett residence “every night” and saying she would “hunt the victim and her son.”

The menacing charge was later dismissed.
