Small fire sends smoke through central Toledo church

Firefighters responded to a small container fire early today at a closed central Toledo church.

The fire was reported at about 9:20 a.m. inside the basement of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 1416 Nebraska Ave. No one was injured.

Church members said it appears someone broke in and lit papers in a metal container in the church basement. It was likely an attempt by someone to stay warm, said Otha Carr, 60, a maintenance and garden employee at the church.

Smoke started coming through the vents in the church lobby, alerting them to the fire, Mr. Carr said.
