Fire crews were on scene Tuesday afternoon outside the HCR ManorCare building to put out an underground transformer fire along Adams Street.
Dozens of employees were sent home after the building lost power around 2:30 p.m.. No injuries have been reported.
Adams Street was blocked off between North Saint Clair Street and North Summit Street, with white smoke billowing from under a sidewalk grill on the HCR ManorCare side of Adams near North Summit.
“It sounded like a loud thunderclap after a close lightning strike,” Anthony Sims, 51, a quality assurance analyst for HCR ManorCare, said. “It was that close. Then the power went out. I looked outside and there’s a huge billow of thick brown smoke.”
Fire officials at the scene said fire crews were fighting a transformer fire under the sidewalk. The fire was not related to an underground electrical issue Monday night nearby in downtown Toledo, they said.
