At least 5 people injured in recent Toledo shootings

At least five people were injured during a recent spike in Toledo shootings. The violent crimes coincide with the deaths of three people in two separate incidents Monday that are being investigated as homicides.

A 15-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to his head was treated today at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.

Marquise Brown, of central Toledo, said he heard gunshots about 2:39 a.m. at Cherry and East Bancroft streets in North Toledo. The teenager said he then realized he was struck and went to the hospital. His injuries are not life threatening, police said.

Guynell Nellons, 33, of central Toledo, was shot in the neck about 4 a.m. today on the 1500 block of Lagrange Street in North Toledo.

Mr. Nellons was walking with an acquaintance when six teenagers approached them. One of the male teenagers drew his attention and shot him. He was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center for injuries police described as not life threatening.

Authorities this afternoon identified the victim in a shooting about 12:14 a.m. today at 733 Plymouth Street in East Toledo. Sarah Beacher was sitting on the porch with friends when unknown suspects began firing. She was shot in the head and found unresponsive. The bullets struck nearby houses and vehicles as well.

She was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, according to the Lucas County EMS.

About 10:45 p.m. Monday, a reported drive-by shooting occurred in the 900 block of Vance Street in central Toledo. An unknown suspect fired from a red Ford Windstar minivan.

Timothy Pettaway-Crawford, 32, of central Toledo covered his face and was struck in the right upper arm. Police said his injuries were not life threatening. He was treated at University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio.

Also, a South Toledo man was hospitalized following a shooting about 1:06 a.m. Sunday.

Shaquille Malone, 21, was struck at Bronson and Stickney avenues in North Toledo.

Police said he was treated at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center for a gunshot wound to the back of his knee. The injury was not life threatening, they said.

The shootings came before and after three Monday homicides.

Police are investigating the 3:20 a.m. Monday shooting of Klib Papa and Devin Melman, both 19. The two men were found dead inside a parked car in an alley behind 138 W. Sylvania Ave.

A stabbing Monday morning at 1041 Alcott St. in West Toledo also killed Johnny Jones, 14, inside his home.
