A West Toledo woman who was carried out of her burning home by first responders died on the way to the hospital early Friday evening, authorities said.
The victim, believed to be in her 50s and possibly disabled, was pronounced dead en route to University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio Hospital, after firefighters forced entry into the 1026 Moran Ave. home.
Her name was withheld pending notification of relatives, Toledo fire Battalion Chief Jerry Takats said.
The woman was the only person home at the time. A large pet dog also died in the fire, Chief Takats said.
The fire in the one-story, single-family home was reported at 5:38 p.m., and firefighters arriving at the scene minutes later reported visible smoke, the battalion chief said. The fire appeared to have started in a rear bedroom, he said.
Officials cordoned off the house, at Moran and Inverness avenues off Dorr Street and south of the University of Toledo, and began photographing the scene and interviewing neighbors. The fire’s cause remained under investigation.
An autopsy is scheduled for today.
