A woman and her adult son escaped without serious injury from a house fire in South Toledo early today, authorities said.
The victims were taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center for evaluation, according to the Lucas County EMS. Toledo Fire Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld said they were transported there for evaluation, as a precaution. Their names and conditions were not released.
The fire occurred about 5:34 a.m. at 1121 Colton St. near South Hawley Street, according to the Toledo fire department. Lieutenant Hertzfeld said the man had escaped from the house before fire crews arrived and rescued his mother. The occupants were alerted to the fire by fire alarms, he said.
Fire crews brought the blaze under control by about 5:50 a.m., according to a fire dispatcher.
Lieutenant Hertzfeld said the fire started in a kitchen oven that was left turned on overnight, in the self-cleaning mode. The fire was ruled accidental, he said.
Damage from the fire was estimated at $17,000.
Lucas County records list Nancy Mettler as the owner of the two-story wood frame house. It was built in 1916.
