A two-alarm blaze at Cherry and George streets in North Toledo destroyed a one-story commercial structure late Wednesday, authorities said.
Toledo fire Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld said the masonry building was a total loss, with damage from the fire estimated at $395,000. What remains of the partially collapsed structure will likely be torn down, he said. There were no reports of people inside the building at the time of the fire and no injuries, the spokesman said.
The blaze was reported about 9:35 p.m., according to the Toledo fire department. Responding crews found heavy smoke and then fire from the roof in the rear of the building.
The battalion chief in command called for a second alarm at 9:42 p.m.
Firefighters were only battling the blaze from the outside. A crew on the aerial ladder reported to the chief in command that the building’s metal roof was collapsing.
It is unknown where and how the fire started, Lt. Hertzfeld said. The cause of the fire is listed as undetermined.
The building had housed Northside Customs, an auto repair and body shop. According to Lucas County auditor records online, the structure was built in 1919 and is owned by Jorge Zapata of Toledo.
