Police identify body found in Ottawa River

Authorities have identified Charles Swyers of Toledo as the man whose body was found in the Ottawa River in Point Place early today after an apparent water scooter accident.

An autopsy for Mr. Swyers, 59, has not been scheduled yet, according to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office.

Capt. Tom Yunker of Washington Township Fire said they responded to the Ottawa River near North Summit Street and Shoreland Avenue about 7:30 a.m. after a passer-by reported a yellow jet ski idling. A short time later they located a body submerged in about three feet of water right behind the jet ski.

The jet ski was about 50 yards from the shore and 150 yards west of the Fred Young Bridge that carries Summit Street over the Ottawa River, Captain Yunker said.

Authorities believe the victim may have run into the bridge support because of marks on the jet ski and bridge, he said. The victim was not wearing a life jacket, according to the spokesman.
