A truck driver whose tractor-trailer crashed into a line of slowly moving cars in an Ohio Turnpike construction zone Sunday has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide in connection with a 14-year-old girl's death in the crash.
Chavan Roosevelt Carter, 40, of Powder Springs, Ga., also is charged with vehicular assault and failure to obey a traffic-control device, the Ohio Highway Patrol's Milan post announced.
Mr. Carter was held in the Erie County jail and is scheduled for arraignment today in Erie County Municipal Court in Milan, Ohio.
Killed in the crash was Madison M. Creagan, 14, of West Shokan, N.Y., who was declared dead at the scene.
Seven other people were injured in the collision reported about 2:15 p.m. near the State Rt. 4 interchange in Erie County's Groton Township. Troopers said Mr. Carter's truck failed to stop in time for the slow traffic ahead.
The turnpike's original lanes are being rebuilt in the area where the crash occurred, and eastbound traffic is divided into two single-file lanes separated by the median barrier wall.
