BOWLING GREEN — A sobriety checkpoint today in Bowling Green is dedicated in memory of Mitch Aring, killed in June, 2012, by a drunk driver.
The checkpoint is slated for 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday on Wooster Street. The Ohio State Highway Patrol, Bowling Green Police Department, Wood County Sheriff’s Office, and Bowling Green State University Police will partner to conduct the checkpoint and additional patrols in the area.
A Friday night checkpoint at U.S. 24 and Country Boulevard in Maumee by Maumee and Sylvania Township police, as part of the Lucas County OVI Task Force, resulted in several arrests and tickets.
Police diverted 29 of 835 passing vehicles. Four people were arrested on warrants, eight were driving on a suspended license, one was found in possession of marijuana, one had an open container in the vehicle, and another had improper child restraints.
A second Friday night checkpoint on Holloway Road near Holland, conducted by the highway patrol in conjunction with the task force, diverted seven of 219 passing vehicles. Officers arrested one person for drunken driving arrest and another for driving under suspension. Nearby patrols also netted an arrest for marijuana.
Those who suspect a driver is impaired should call #677 to report the vehicle to the highway patrol.
