Southbound I-75 in central Toledo has reopened after being closed for about 10 hours because of a fiery crash that killed a wrong-way driver early today, authorities said.
Traffic in the southbound lanes resumed by 11:30 a.m., according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.
The man, who was trapped in the burning wreckage, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Toledo police. He has not been identified, according to Lt. Joe Heffernan.
Dr. Cynthia Beisser, a deputy Lucas County coroner who conducted an autopsy on the victim, said he died of multiple blunt-force injuries suffered in the crash. An official identification of the victim had not been made because the victim's face was burned beyond recognition and because identification by dental records takes longer, she said.
Police said the vehicle was going north in the southbound lanes at the West Central Avenue overpass near North Cove Boulevard about 1:30 a.m. when it hit a tractor-trailer rig head-on and then was struck by another semi, bursting into flames.
Lieutenant Heffernan said police were reviewing the footage from ODOT video cameras to determine where and how the wrong-way driver got onto the highway, heading in the wrong direction.
Daniel Garlow, Jr., 37, of Hagersville, Ont., who was driving the truck that was struck head-on, was taken to ProMedica Toledo Hospital, according to police. A hospital spokesman said he was treated and released.
Jason Freiman, 47, of Carbondale, Pa., the driver of the other semi, was not injured in the crash, according to police.
The crash remains under investigation by police, who released no further details.
