Family members continued grieving today after an apparent accidental shooting killed a 3-year-old Toledo boy this weekend in central city.
Toledo police responded about 12:55 p.m. Saturday to a person shot at a residence in the 100 block of Rockingham Street. Authorities believe a 7-year-old shot Ty-Ryne Hoskins, 3, inside the home. He was pronounced dead at 1:17 p.m. at Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center.
An autopsy determined he was shot in the torso. The manner of death was ruled homicide.
Ty-Ryne is the city’s 26th homicide victim this year and 29th in the metro area.
Police are still investigating what occurred and who owned the gun that was inside the home. Prosecutors will then decide whether to file charges, said Lt. Joe Heffernan, department spokesman.
His mother, Lakwanda Brown, said the boy was her second youngest of four children. He would frequently walk up to Ms. Brown and tell her he loved her, she said.
“He was just so full of life. My baby thought he was a little man,” said Ms. Brown, 24, of Toledo.
Loved ones held a vigil Sunday in front of the home. Ms. Brown told mothers who attended to always hug their children.
“My family have been here for me tremendously. They're keeping me together,” she said.
Ms. Brown, who was away at the hospital during the shooting, declined to comment on the incident.
