MONROE — A 70-year-old man has died in a hospital from injuries suffered in a fire that killed his grandson, injured two other family members, and destroyed their Monroe Township house.
Ruben Castorena was pronounced dead at 5:55 p.m. Wednesday at Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center, where he was previously listed in critical condition, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
His grandson, Alex Johnson, 18, a junior at Monroe High School, was pronounced dead at the scene of the early morning fire Tuesday in the 14900 block of Tiara Avenue near East Dunbar Road, according to the sheriff’s office.
Mr. Castorena’s wife, Amelia, 72, and Monica Castorena, 42, Alex’s mother, were listed in stable condition at the hospital, sheriff’s deputies said. Alex’s sister, Jessica, 16, escaped unhurt.
The cause of the fire is unknown. The Michigan State Police fire marshal is the township fire department with the investigation.
