Fire destroys unoccupied duplex in west Toledo

Fire destroys unoccupied duplex in west Toledo

A fire of a yet unknown origin destroyed an unoccupied two-story duplex in west Toledo early today, authorities said.

There were no reported injuries, according to the Toledo Fire Department. Fire Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld, department spokesman, said the lower residence was vacant and that the occupant of the upper residence, Victor Savage, wasn’t home at the time of the fire.

The fire at 1467 Fernwood Ave. was reported about 4:46 a.m., a fire dispatcher said. Fire crews arrived, saw heavy fire, attacked the blaze, and brought it under control about 5:15 a.m., but not before the duplex was a total loss, Lieutenant Hertzfeld said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire damage estimate was about $68,000, according to the spokesman.

Lucas County records list George Orsurvtc and Tamika Savage Orsurvtc as the owners of the metal and vinyl duplex. It was built in 1908.

The duplex is scheduled to be razed later today.
