A central Toledo man wanted for last week’s shooting death of Jonathan Cain, 24, has been taken into custody and charged with an open warrant of murder.

Deshone Sykes, 21, of the 2200 block of Fulton Street, is being investigated for the shooting at the Greenbelt Place apartment complex, according to the Toledo Police Department’s Facebook page. 

Police said there was a dispute between the two men in the 800 block of Walnut Street, and that Sykes then retrieved a handgun. They said he shot multiple times at Cain. A 911 caller reported the shooting at 1:24 p.m. Wednesday. 

Cain died at Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center.

An autopsy determined he suffered a single gunshot wound to the neck. Deputy Coroner Dr. Jeffrey Hudson ruled the death a homicide.

After the shooting, police believe Sykes cut off the electronic monitoring device he was required to wear because of a separate case, Toledo police Lt. Joe Heffernan said.

The device was found near Fulton and Batavia streets. He has been charged with an additional misdemeanor count of escape.

Toledo Municipal Court records show Sykes was placed on electronic monitoring after pleading no contest Feb. 21 to attempt to commit an offense.

Police initially charged him with petty theft after officers suspected he stole $75 in merchandise from Dollar General, 324 W. Bancroft St. They found him with the items Jan. 22, according to court records.

There was no answer Thursday at the listed address for Cain.

There have been 10 homicides so far this year in the city, an average of more than one per week.
