The Toledo Fire and Rescue Department recently earned a top rating from the Insurance Service Office, city officials announced Monday.
Following an evaluation of the fire department’s operations this past fall, its rating went from a class 3 to a class 1, which is the best rating, Chief Luis Santiago said. Paying special attention to training records, increasing staffing levels, and a better overall performance of the department helped to play a role in the increase, he said.
“We’re very proud of this accomplishment,” Chief Santiago said, thanking staff members.
“Most importantly, it’s the men and women on our department who just do a great job every day and provide a great service to our community.”
Chief Santiago encouraged residents to check with their insurance carriers to see if it has any impact on their premiums.
Only 241 out of more than 48,000 communities nationwide have earned the class 1 rating.
“I truly am amazed of the work that they’re able to do and how they have worked so hard for our citizens,” Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson said.
The fire department made more than 60,000 fire and medical runs in 2016, according to the mayor.
