A former Springfield High School math teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a student pleaded guilty today during his first appearance in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.
Kyle McKinch, 28, of the 6000 block of Gettysburg Drive in Sylvania entered guilty pleas to a bill of information charging him with one count of sexual battery and three counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. He admitted he had sex with a girl between the ages of 15 and 16 at his home and in his vehicle.
Each of the charges is a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
Judge Ruth Ann Franks also told McKinch he would be required to register as a sex offender every 90 days for the rest of his life and that he would likely lose his teaching license.
Prosecutors said the offenses occurred between Jan. 29 and Aug. 31, 2016 while he was a teacher at Springfield High School.
His teaching contract was not renewed after the 2015-16 school year because of poor teaching performance, and McKinch was then hired last fall by Central Catholic High School to teach math.
Central Catholic officials said they put McKinch on administrative leave Feb. 13 after learning of the criminal investigation. Prosecutors said they are unaware of any other victims.
Greg Dempsey, interim president of Central Catholic, said McKinch was terminated today after the school learned of his felony convictions.
Judge Ruth Ann Franks accepted McKinch's guilty pleas and scheduled sentencing for April 25.
The judge set bond at $150,000 and McKinch was taken into custody.
