FINDLAY – Findlay officials have fired the city's former acting police chief after an investigation of his domestic-violence case.
Sean Young, 46, collected tens of thousands of dollars in wages while on paid leave for several months. On Friday, Mayor Lydia Mihalik announced his termination.
Acting as a neutral outside party, the Toledo Police Department's internal affairs section recently completed an investigation into Mr. Young's actions. He was administratively sustained on domestic violence and other administrative violations.
Administrators did not disclose those latter violations Friday. Mayor Mihalik did not return a call seeking comment.
In a news release, Mayor Mihalik said she made the decision following a review of the independent investigation.
“I am saddened that his service to this community has come to an end so abruptly. Our community demands and I require that members of our police department follow the laws of our community and our policies both on and off duty,” she said.
Mr. Young last June pleaded guilty in Findlay Municipal Court to misdemeanor domestic violence.
Prosecutors said he threw a video camera at his wife's head Feb. 4 during a birthday party for their daughter in rural Bluffton, Ohio, with the resulting injury requiring five stitches at a hospital.
If Mr. Young completes the domestic-violence diversion program and continues following terms of a protection order, the case against him will be dismissed.
Mayor Mihalik placed Mr. Young on paid administrative leave soon after his criminal charge. As of last week, Mr. Young received a base pay of $60,114 this year, according to the city's Findlay Ohio Finances website.
At this rate, the city paid Mr. Young about $50,600 in wages from early February until this week's termination.
Mr. Young became acting chief in January after Chief Greg Horne’s retirement. He was promoted from lieutenant to captain in 2010, and has been a member of the Findlay police since 1996. He declined comment Friday.
Chief John Dunbar now leads the city department.
