Body found in Catawba Island Township car fire

CATAWBA ISLAND, Ohio — Catawba Island Township police are investigating after a body was found inside a burning car.

An officer noticed the car fire at about 1 a.m. Sunday in a private driveway in the 2500 block of State Rt. 53, said Catawba Island Township Police Chief John Gangway.

Firefighters found a body after extinguishing the fire, Chief Gangway said. The body was sent to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office for positive identification and to determine the cause of death.

Preliminary investigations don’t suggest foul play, the chief said.

Chief Gangway said the car was about 20 feet away from the home and caused no damage to the structure.

The state fire marshal’s office is assisting in the investigation, the chief said.
