Two youths appear in court for threats, assault

Two teenagers accused of making threats against or at area schools appeared Wednesday in Lucas County Juvenile Court.

Miriam Dabbs, 17, a student at Woodward High School, was arrested Tuesday and charged with inducing panic, a misdemeanor offense. She is accused of making a threat against Woodward High School on social media, according to a Toledo police report.

In a separate case, Andre McCormick, 13, is accused of stabbing a Washington Local School security officer Tuesday at Jefferson Junior High School. He is charged with felonious assault, a first-degree felony.

Both youths appeared Wednesday before Lucas County Juvenile Court Magistrate Robert Jones Jr., where they each entered a denial to their charge.

The McCormick youth is accused of luring officer Craig Hanna from his office at about 9:43 a.m. Tuesday. Mr. Hanna felt a poke in his abdomen area, and he then saw a kitchen knife fall to the ground, according to a police report.

The officer was not injured and he was in attendance at a Washington Local School Board meeting that night, indicating to attendees he was OK.

The girl is accused of making a threat to “shoot up” Woodward High School, a police report showed.

School administrators were notified by another student of the post, according to a Toledo Public Schools statement. Toledo Public Schools security and Toledo police were notified.

No weapon was actually found in connection to the Woodward High School incident, officials said.

The mother of the Dabbs youth said she was involved in marching band and church activities, and her stepfather described her as “peaceful” and “sociable.”

James Restivo, the McCormick boy’s attorney, said his client is autistic. The youth’s parents asked the magistrate for him to be released on house arrest.

Lori Olender, deputy chief of the juvenile division, said such threats must be taken seriously. She recommended the youths be held in detention because of the seriousness of the offenses.

“The state takes these threats that have been ongoing in Toledo extremely seriously. We believe the only way for the youth to take these seriously is for them to be held accountable,” Ms. Olender said during the Dabbs youth’s hearing.

The Dabbs youth was released on house arrest and ordered to stay off social media, while the McCormick boy will remain in detention until his next hearing.

On Wednesday, Whitehouse police announced they charged a 13-year-old student at Anthony Wayne Junior High School with inducing panic. Police said the student posted a threat on social media last month, and it was reported to school officials last week. Police did not name the student.

Earlier this week, 20-year-old Christian Costet, of the 600 block of Congress Avenue, was arrested at his home by Toledo Police Special Weapons and Tactics after officers said he made threats against Waite High School on social media. Toledo Municipal Court Judge Nicole Khoury set his bond at $50,000.

Ms. Olender said she is worried because she’s never seen so many similar threats around the same time.

“This isn’t just a joke. I keep hearing that. I’m getting a little tired of hearing, ‘I just thought it was a joke, I was just joking.’ It’s just not a joke,” she said.

Separately, the Perrysburg Police Division was contacted Friday by the school office after they received a complaint from a parent regarding a Perrysburg Junior High student making a verbal threat two months ago. An investigation was conducted, and the complaint was determined to be unfounded, the police department reported Wednesday.

Defiance Police said Wednesday that a 14-year-old boy is charged with inducing panic, making false alarms, menacing, and indimidation in Defiance County Juvenile Court after the boy made threatening comments on Tuesday against Defiance Middle School. An investigation determined there was no immediate threat to the school, police said.
